PHOTOGRAPHY PORTFOLIO | Camouflage Tree

Right by the funky tennis court by Mussolini's sports arena in Rome Triptych (Camouflage Tree)
Claudia C. Sandor, Rome 1999

The triptych consists of three photos of one tree. Each close-up shows a different aspect of the tree and/or its environment.

Though the photos show little of the tree's surroundings, the title directs our attention to its special environment. The site is an area of Rome that was developed under Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini in 1922, celebrating physical skill. Foro Mussolini was further developed when Mussolini was planning its Olympic Games to take place in 1942. World War 2 made sure that this “peaceful” event never took place.

A tree usually develops according to its given nature, normally growing as if oblivious to the events that take place around it. This tree, however, seems to have changed so as to fit into its urban and hostile setting. Patterns in military camouflage are too stylized to ever really be mistaken as nature. The bark of this tree however, seems unnaturally graphic.
